Information about Yalova Thermal Springs

Situated just 12 km from the center of Yalova, the captivating Yalova Thermal Springs are nestled within a picturesque valley, adorned with rare flora and embraced by majestic mountains. Spanning an expansive forest area of 3600 sq. m, the history of these springs dates back over 1600 years.

The origins of the thermal baths, or hammams, can be traced back to the Byzantine era when they were first constructed by Emperor Constantine. Over time, subsequent Byzantine emperors added their own structures, expanding the complex. However, with the Ottoman conquest of Yalova, the local thermal springs were overshadowed by the fame of Bursa, the empire's capital, renowned for its own hot springs.

It was during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II (1876-1908) that the resort regained popularity and experienced a renaissance. Historical buildings were meticulously restored, and new structures were erected, rapidly transforming the thermal spa into a global hub for health and entertainment.

Unfortunately, the resort suffered devastation and abandonment during the tumultuous period of continuous wars, including the Balkan War (1912-1913), World War I (1918-1922), and the Turkish War of Independence.

Despite its tumultuous history, the Yalova Thermal Springs have endured and continue to captivate visitors with their natural beauty, healing properties, and rich cultural heritage. Join us on our Yalova Thermal Tour and immerse yourself in the fascinating narrative of these ancient springs.

Destiny of the Place Changes

The arrival of the esteemed Turkish leader, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, in Yalova on August 19, 1919, marked a turning point in the destiny of the Yalova Thermal Springs.

Atatürk, who held a deep admiration for the thermal waters, played a pivotal role in elevating this destination into a renowned wellness center. With his unwavering commitment, skilled craftsmen were mobilized to reconstruct and restore the thermal complex to its former glory. As you embark on the Yalova Thermal Tour, you will have the opportunity to witness Atatürk's legacy firsthand by visiting his estate, where he once resided.

Today, the Yalova thermal springs stand as a testament to their historical, archaeological, and natural significance, proudly designated as a first-degree landmark.
